Juan Esteban Martinez-Jaramillo, Ph.D.

System Dynamics, Energy Transitions, Environmental Policy, Circular Economy

I'm Juan, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Stuttgart. I use System Dynamics and simulation to study sustainability transitions in energy, transport, and the circular economy, building models that support evidence-based policy for low-carbon futures.

About me

I’m Juan Esteban Martínez Jaramillo, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Stuttgart, specialising in System Dynamics and simulation modelling for sustainability transitions. My work explores the intersection of environmental policy, energy systems, business models, and digital manufacturing, with a focus on understanding the complex dynamics shaping socio-economic systems.I hold a Ph.D. in Business Analytics from the University of Lausanne, where I investigated the long-term impacts of climate change on Switzerland’s energy transition. My academic journey also includes a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Systems and Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, where I began applying dynamic models to food security, biofuels, and transport policy. With over a decade of research and teaching experience across Colombia, Switzerland, and Germany, I’ve contributed to numerous international projects and peer-reviewed publications on climate policy, circular economy, and resilient industrial transformation. I’ve also taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in System Dynamics, operational research, and decision modelling in both academic and applied settings.I’m passionate about using simulation and systems thinking to inform evidence-based decision-making and to support the development of resilient, low-carbon futures.

Teaching & Supervision
I teach courses on Business Dynamics, System Dynamics, and the Seminar Wirtschaftskybernetik at the University of Stuttgart, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Previously, I taught Decision Analysis and Strategic Modelling at the Université de Lausanne, and Operational Research, Simulation, and Discrete Multi-criteria Methods at institutions in Colombia.
I am currently supervising Bachelor's and Master's theses and am actively looking for motivated students interested in using System Dynamics to analyze sustainability in manufacturing, socio-economic systems, and impacts of public policy.Supervision record: 1 MSc thesis (Université de Lausanne) · 4 BA theses (University of Stuttgart)
